Process Time Interval

 

The time interval between the injection and sample points is also important.  this is know as the "process time interval", and involves not only the time it takes for the chlorine residual to traverse these two points, but can also be the time it takes for the water being treated to respond to the chlorine injection.  It is generally based on typical flowrates for flowmeter applications, or actual flowrates for fixed flow installations.  The required time interval for proper chlorine control is not the same as the required time interval for chlorine contact or monitoring.  The proper time interval for control, should be relatively short, enough for a good chlorine residual mix and short recovery times.  Typically a good control interval would be somewhere between 2 to 10 minutes.  If the control time interval is too long, any system upsets in residual will take a long time for the controller to correct, during which the residual levels could be in violation of limits for an extended period of time.  Typical chlorine contact or monitoring times are usually in excess of 20 minutes, which potentially give system recovery times of one to several hours.
